At the last AGM (May 2010) I explained that our community would be making a donation to a local bird park in memory of Peter Druitt. The donation was made to the Parque Regional de Salinas de San Pedro. The management of the park were shocked but equally clearly honoured to receive such a gift and came up with the idea of using the donation to produce some new bird information charts. These charts are to be placed inside the hides and give vistors an easy reference point to identify the different birds they can view throughout the year. Along the bottom of the charts is a dedication to Peter which also mentions that he was a keen bird watcher himself.
Donna Druitt, accompanied by friends David Prosser, Mike and Barbara Osborn and I visited the park and staff on Thursday 14th October. We met the Director; Theresa and two of her guides; Fran and Marie José, who kindly accompanied us on a tour of the reserve and showed us the information charts already placed in one of the hides. The park is well worth a visit, it is easy to find and only 20 minutes from Calle Cereza - simply take the AP7 south, take the first San Pedro exit, head towards Lo Pagan and find the park opposite the Hotel Thalassa. The Visitors' Centre is opposite the entrance to the park. I'm happy to pass on to you all Donna's words that Peter would have liked this very much.
